Podcast 119: Sam Shorkey, Vegan Fitness Champion on Building Muscle with Plants and the Dark Side of Aesthetic Perfection

Sam Shorkey became an animal ambassador while growing up in a log house in the middle of the forest in Canada. She became friendly with the local wildlife, especially the droves of deer that would come onto the property. Every year when hunting season rolled around she would hear gunfire and then ultimately have to mourn the loss of her friends.

Her parents were traditional country folk and a typical meal included meat, potatoes, and a vegetable. Over time, Sam made the connection between what was on her plate and the friends in her backyard. Once this clicked, she declared her veganism to the world and the rest is history.

Until that one time when she made history.

Fast forward from the 1990s to 2014 when Sam became the first-ever vegan World Naturals Bikini Pro. This was the win that launched her career as a vegan fitness coach and gained her much attention in the bodybuilding world. She decided to quit her extra jobs and go “all in” to create the now popular Jacked on the Beanstalk empire.

We came to know Sam a few years back when BJ hired her to help him muscle up for Ironman racing. Sam is a live wire, she is truthful and not afraid to shine a light on the dark side of aesthetic perfection. We dive into nutrition and she shares with us some of her favorite sweet tooth indulgences. We talk about how to build muscle on plants and navigate the gassiness that can surely accompany a bulked up vegan diet. But arguably what is closest to Sam’s heart, is her commitment to mindfully leading her clients to achieve a cut physique without slaughtering their self-love.
