We are beyond excited to bring Dr. Neal Barnard to the YT community. The author of more than 70 scientific publications and 18 books, Dr. Barnard is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, clinical researcher, adjunct professor of medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and New York Time Best selling author.
He is one of the most esteemed advocates for health and nutrition, education for medical students, preventative care and higher standards in research. He hosts continuing education conferences for health care providers each year in addition to the extensive e-learning opportunities for physicians through PCRM’s website.
In January 2016, the Barnard Medical Center, a non-profit center with a staff of doctor’s, nurses and dietitians dedicated to providing complete primary care by integrating nutrition and medicine, opened its doors. Putting research to work, the Barnard Medical Center is focused on showing the medical industry that a new approach to health through preventative medicine and nutrition can help treat and reverse leading chronic conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, migraine headaches, arthritis and obesity.
Dr. Barnard is a much sought after nutrition and research expert having hosted a series of PBS television programs, been featured in several nutrition based documentaries as well as national news programs and publications. He and his team at PCRM are leading the charge on increasing awareness and scientific evidence on the far reaching benefits of a plant-based diet on our health.
Dr. Barnard grew up in Fargo, North Dakota eating roast beef, baked potatoes and corn. A diet he now refers to as a diet of deprivation whereas a plant-based diet provides endless options with many cultural influences. He is convinced that it is time to stop questioning the benefits of adopting a whole foods plant-based diet as its been shown time and again that it leads to healthier weight loss and maintenance, reversal of heart disease and other heart related issues as well as positively affecting other devastating diseases such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. He whole heartedly recommends avoiding animal fat 100% to ensure our greatest chance for long term health.
In this episode, Dr. Barnard clears up the confusion about diabetes; its root cause and how to treat it, he breaks down the foundation of research, the problem with eggs and dairy, the motivation behind big food industry to keep the public confused and the positive “side effects” that people experience when switching to a plant-based diet.
